Things to Do in
Downtown Newmarket
The Farmers' Market, Riverwalk Commons, Fairy Lake, the best tables on Main Street, and where the locals actually park. Everything worth knowing about one of the GTA's most underrated downtowns.
Start HerePunching Above Its Weight
Ask anyone who's lived in Newmarket longer than a year what they love about the town, and Main Street comes up nearly every time.
The historic downtown... built around the heritage Main Street strip and anchored by Fairy Lake and Riverwalk Commons... is one of the most charming downtowns in the GTA. It's also one of the most overlooked, mostly because people haven't made the drive north yet.
The Newmarket Main Street BIA sums it up nicely: start at The Old Fire Hall, walk down toward Fairy Lake, and along the way you'll pass boutiques, upscale restaurants, galleries, spas, and an award-winning seasonal Farmers' Market. It's a downtown built for slow wandering, the kind of place where you duck in for a quick coffee and leave ninety minutes later after a full chat with the owner.
For me, this downtown is one of the best arguments for buying a home in Newmarket. When buyers ask what it's really like to live here, not just commute through... downtown is the first place I take them.
Section 01 — The Heart of It All Historic Main Street
Main Street is where Newmarket started, and it's still the heart of the community. Victorian and Edwardian heritage buildings, independent boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and professional services, a real sense of place you can't fake in a big-box plaza. TripAdvisor reviewers consistently rank Main Street Newmarket among Ontario's best for its shops, bars, restaurants, and historic feel.
The street runs north to south. The north end sits near the Newmarket GO Station and Southlake Regional Health Centre; the south end opens onto Fairy Lake Park and Riverwalk Commons. Walking end to end takes about 15 minutes at a stroll though realistically, plan for longer, because there's always a reason to stop.
The restored Old Town Hall at Main Street South and Millard Avenue anchors the commercial core, and the Newmarket Public Library sits right on Main Street.
Section 02 — Food & DrinkWhere to Eat on Main Street
The dining scene on Main Street has grown a lot lately — a mix of long-time favourites and newer arrivals bringing real range. The spots worth knowing:
The Maids' Cottage
A beloved family-owned institution right on Main Street and the Newmarket brunch spot. The butter tarts are legendary, they won best in Ontario and are baked fresh daily in flavours like pecan, carrot cake, raisin, and pumpkin butter. Go early before they sell out. Also expect egg dishes, wraps, quiche, and French toast. Dog-friendly patio. Closed Sundays.
Mercado on Main
A newer arrival with strong early buzz. Reviewers love the pasta Al Forno and call the tulip tiramisù a standout. Quality ingredients, carefully composed plates, worth a Main Street dinner.
Joia on Main
Newmarket's Italian fine-dining destination, just off Main at 497 Timothy Street, steps from Fairy Lake and Riverwalk Commons. Authentic Italian and a well-curated wine list: veal scaloppini with wild mushroom marsala, wood-fired pizza with a killer crust, house-made gnocchi, and the beet, arugula, and spinach salad with goat cheese and pistachios that regulars swear by. The tiramisù and crème brûlée earn their reputation.
The covered patio over Fairy Lake is one of the nicest outdoor tables in York Region, and the upstairs space is popular for events. Live music Thursdays. Closed Mondays; reservations recommended. Call (905) 235-8070.
Lil' Brew Hops & Hungry Brew Hops
Two connected Main Street institutions for craft beer fans... burgers, wings, and rotating taps. Bonus: the free parking hidden behind these bars on the west side is one of downtown's best-kept secrets.
Davis Diner
Near the north end by the GO Station and Southlake, this is an easy, unpretentious spot for all-day breakfast, BLTs, waffles, and diner classics. A solid launch pad if you're arriving by train.
Olive Oil Co. Inc. Newmarket
A boutique olive oil tasting shop on Main Street, sample extra-virgin oils and aged balsamics from around the world. Great for food lovers and gifts.
Section 03 — Outdoor SpacesFairy Lake & Riverwalk Commons
Start or finish any downtown visit here. These two connected spaces at the south end of Main Street are the social and recreational heart of the area, and genuinely exceptional for a town this size.
Fairy Lake Park
Just south of the strip on the East Holland River. The 1.77 km Fairy Lake Loop is a paved, accessible trail ... perfect for a post-lunch walk. Expect resident swans, ducks, geese, and snapping turtles, plus a small waterfall at the river dam. Covered pavilions, playgrounds, and washrooms make it one of the most complete family parks in York Region.
Riverwalk Commons
Just north on Doug Duncan Drive, the town's premier outdoor hub. Summers bring concerts, festivals, comedians, movie nights, and open-air theatre through the Newmarket BIA's event programme, plus a seasonal splash pad. Big events include Tim Hortons Canada Day, the TD Newmarket Music Series, Splash of Culture, Moonlight Movies, and Frozen Fridays. Come winter, it becomes an outdoor skating rink — one of the nicest around.
Section 04 — Saturday MorningsThe Newmarket Farmers' Market
Every Saturday morning from the first weekend of May through the last weekend of October, Riverwalk Commons transforms into the Newmarket Farmers' Market... one of the best Saturday traditions in York Region. With 25+ years running and the 2024 Award of Excellence from Farmers' Markets of Ontario, it's the real deal.
Over 40 local farmers and vendors bring farm-fresh produce, home-baked goods, handmade crafts, artisanal preserves, and seasonal specialties. Regulars rave about the lettuce, cherry season, and the baked goods. It's as much a place to meet neighbours over coffee as it is to shop.
- When: Every Saturday, May through October (first market is usually the first Saturday of May)
- Hours: Saturday mornings — go early for the best baked goods and produce
- Where: Riverwalk Commons, Doug Duncan Drive, south end of Main Street

Section 05 — Arts & CultureGalleries, Theatre & Festivals
For its size, downtown Newmarket has a surprisingly full cultural calendar... visual art, live theatre, beer festivals, something going most weekends spring through fall.
- Art at 395 — Three public galleries in the Newmarket Municipal Offices on Mulock Drive, celebrating local history and regional heritage. Free during office hours.
- Elman W. Campbell Museum — The town's local history museum, with artifacts, photos, and rotating exhibits.
- Newmarket Artwalk — Every October, 40+ artists across 11 venues within walking distance of Main Street.
- Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays... Early September, playwrights from around the world performing original one-acts.
- Community Craft Beer Festival... A two-day June event at Riverwalk Commons celebrating Ontario breweries, cideries, and spirits producers.
- Newmarket Lions Club Artisan Festival... A free family-friendly event at Fairy Lake Park featuring local artists.
For the full slate, the BIA keeps a seasonal calendar at newmarketmainstreet.com. Culture Days in September and October adds free arts and heritage activities across town.
Section 06 — ShoppingThe Main Street Independents
This is not mall shopping. It's a real collection of independent retailers worth the trip precisely because you won't find them anywhere else, fashion boutiques, home décor, gift shops, galleries, specialty food (including the Olive Oil Co. and the Farmers' Market vendors), wellness and beauty businesses, and professional services. The mix shifts seasonally as new shops arrive.
Prefer a bigger mall? Upper Canada Mall on Yonge Street has 100+ stores nearby... a totally different experience, but a handy option. Still, supporting the Main Street independents is what gives downtown its character and keeps it worth visiting.
Newmarket LivingWhat Downtown Says About Living Here
A town's downtown tells you a lot about living there, and Newmarket's story is a good one: a thriving Main Street of independents, a well-used waterfront park, a provincially recognized Farmers' Market, and a cultural calendar that overdelivers for a town this size. None of that happens by accident... it's decades of investment in trails, parks, arts, and a BIA that keeps Main Street humming.
Especially first-time buyers moving from renting to owning. Newmarket is one of the communities I know best. If you're thinking about buying a home here, I'd love to help you find a neighbourhood that fits how you want to live — and show you Main Street on a May Saturday when the Farmers' Market is in full swing.
